One of “Murphy’s Laws of Combat” states: “If the enemy is in range, so are you.”
This is usually true in Kendo as well.
When it’s not true, it usually means you’re fighting someone shorter/taller than you or a man/woman/youth (depending on who you are).
In theory, a player taller than you can strike your men from further away than someone your height. The opposite is also theoretically true – and may apply in some cases.
I hope to see you in issoku-itto-no-maai soon!
