shiai-image1We welcome new members who want to learn Kendo three times per year, during the months of January, May, and September.

Classes are held at the Church of St. John the Evangelist, 12 Carleton St. South, Thorold.

No experience is required. For Kendo, students must be at least 12 years of age to practice. If you are a parent and your child who is younger than 12 really, really, REALLY wants to do Kendo, we will accept them IF an adult responsible for their care attends and participates in all their classes.

If you are interested in joining, please contact us.

Kendo Dues

The Niagara Kendo Club is run on a not-for-profit basis. All monies received are put towards rent, equipment, and other club expenses. Dues are $120 for a 3-month term for each individual member.

Every year the club pays dues to the Canadian Kendo Federation (CKF) and Ontario Kendo Federation (OKF). On an individual basis, all members of the Niagara Kendo Club must be registered with the CKF for grading and insurance purposes. Please visit https://kendo-canada.com/ to register or renew your CKF membership.

Other Costs

Kendo requires an investment in equipment and uniforms, but with the exception of the shinai (bamboo sword), armour (bogu) and uniforms (keiko-gi and hakama) tend to last for years. Expect to pay around $280 for the uniform, a shinai, set of bokuto (wooden swords) and a shinai/bokuto carry bag, plus shipping (and duty, if ordered from a non-Canadian supplier). Uniforms often last at least two years. Shinai and bokuto wear out and will need to be maintained and eventually replaced.

You do not need to purchase a uniform right away. However, we do encourage all students to purchase a shinai, bokuto set and carry bag once they have committed to join the club. The club has loaner shinai and bokuto in limited quantities.

Bogu usually holds its value well so if you ever decide to leave Kendo or upgrade to a new set, you’ll be able to sell it fairly easily. The club has several sets of bogu available for rent for a small monthly fee. If you’re interested in purchasing, a decent set of bogu starts around $750 and should last for many years.
